Ian Bartholomew

I joined Hatmill in May 2022, having worked with major logistics automation suppliers since 1995. I specialise in solution design with a strong focus on integration management guiding the end user to an achievable project; that ensures a coherent, deliverable, testable and operable logistics solution.

Ensuring the solution meets the client’s original business and data requirements.

I joined Hatmill in May 2022 after more than 25 years of experience working with major logistics automation suppliers.  I started my career at Alstom as a simulation engineer of baggage handling systems.   A valuable introduction into material flow through automated conveyor, sortation and storage systems.  Simulation insights taught me process flow, control system software, and how to combine automated components.

After four years I moved into warehouse & distribution at FKI as a design engineer.  Where I managed proposal bids from initial concept to handover to the project realisation team.  While at FKI I became interested in the whole project solution; understanding the technical and operational integration of a project. So that all parties had one understanding of the target design and its operation.

This led to five years as an integration manager; being responsible for the technical and operational integration of a project in order to deliver a coherent, thoroughly tested solution that meets the contractual obligations.  Two years were spent with Vanderlande where I returned to baggage handling.  A varied role that covered integration team management, strategy and planning, solution concept guardian, and systems change management.

In 2011 I joined TGW a provider of intralogistics systems, whose core markets are Fashion & Apparel, Grocery, and Industrial & Consumer Goods.  As a Process and Software consultant; my role was to consult with the client in order to fully understand all aspects of their requirement and to bring this understanding back to the wider business in order to support the development of the solution design and the coordination of IT definition and costing.  This role specifically built on my experience of:

  • Initial project analysis, concept design, and risk assessment
  • Data analysis, process mapping, concept design
  • WMS/WCS software functional specification and gap analysis
  • Guiding the client to an achievable project; that ensures a coherent, deliverable, testable, and operable solution
  • Ensuring the solution meets the client’s original business and data requirements.

My experience of being an automation providers allows me to focus on delivering the best in practice solution while being aware of the common, and less so common, automation pitfalls.

By improving their demand forecast, we helped one client save £3m in agency staffing costs (that’s an 18% reduction).
